Question: What is Dragon Thrones in a nutshell?

Dragon Thrones has many features for new players excited about becoming epic heroes in a fantasy realm, vacationing in historic locations with other players worldwide, and telling thrilling tales through roleplaying and gaming. Dragon Thrones event features are “opt-in,” - meaning that YOU choose what YOU want to explore during the weekend adventure! Dragon Thrones is an interactive weekend vacation (for players 21 and over) where you become an epic character, creating unforgettable stories! You make impactful decisions in Live Action Roleplaying (LARP) and tabletop gaming (RPGs, map strategy, social strategy, and more) through interaction with Game Masters (GMs) and costumed Non-Player Characters (NPCs).

As seen in the above right-side image Dragon Thrones combines costumed roleplaying with tabletop gaming in castle-like locations for an all-inclusive fantasy vacation. What is always important is that you choose what features are most interesting to you and then participate in those features to do what is best for the story!

Question: What are the rules of play?

Dragon Thrones is a “rules light but story-rich” game with an open-world game and flexible plot. Like European theater or parlor Larps (often called “Nordic Larps”), you communicate with other players, get their consent, and talk to GMs before taking significant actions. The goal of Consent Larp is to have fun and help others have fun! However, consent Larping does not mean there is no conflict, or no combat, or death. Instead, everyone is working together on those impactful and dramatic plots. In many ways, this style of interactive roleplaying results in powerful scenes and story resolutions because everyone is involved and respected.

There are broadly four types of rulesets for Dragon Thrones:

• Theater/Parlor Larp: uses collaborative consent-based storytelling rules for character plot progression.

• Interactive Physical Questing with Player vs. NPC Monster (Player vs Environment) features, similar to latex weapon combat Larp or convention quests like ‘True Dungeon’ as GenCon.

• D&D 5E RPG Rules: used for table gaming and map questing in character.

• War & Political Strategy Gaming: for select players who enjoy tactical area control tabletop gaming or model UN modular games.

• Our Features will always use simple rules for that particular feature. Examples: if you opt into combat questing, you will be given cleared weapons, trained, and guided by professionals, or if you enter puzzle space, you may encounter a puzzle master guide, or if you are attending a political high tea with social deduction you will be given the basic rules by an NPC. Our staff is prepared to assist you with having fun at all times!

Question: Why use consent Larp?

Dragon Thrones is a collaborative storytelling event where everyone shares the best possible shared story. Although winning can be satisfying, losing tragically and spectacularly is just as crucial to the story and fun. We also understand that players love the ability to create new plots apart from the main game objectives to see their characters develop. Your play with others is dictated by what you are comfortable with and what you think would be best for your character - good or bad.

Question: Can you please explain how combat works?

There are three primary types of combat:

1. Player vs. Player Combat (PvP): Players can combat each other after both players agree (consent) to PvP combat. PvP combat is first cleared by a GM and thereafter, the combat scene takes place in a safe location at the best possible time to progress the story between the combatants and spectators. PvP combat is never random. It’s taken seriously and scripted with the utmost respect for the characters, historic location, and with light touch combat duel with weapons or magic if desired. Combat is never determined by someone's real-world weaponry or athletic ability. Instead, PvP combat is given life by your imagination with the assistance of GMs in staged locations.

2. Player vs. Environment or NPC Combat (PvE): Players can choose to combat NPC monsters and other adversaries. Players are trained on the light touch combat style, given clear and concise instruction, handed an approved weapon, and then permitted to enter areas of our game venues where these enemy NPCs will appear. PvE quests are often a mix of latex weapon combat, magic casting, and puzzles. Quests are overseen by an experienced staff with decades of light-touch combat and storytelling expertise.

3. RPG Tabletop Combat:

   Your character can die in Dragon Thrones if you choose to engage in features that can threaten your health. If your character perishes, you are then sent on a death quest and will return to the game, magically resurrected but permanently changed for the safety of all involved. Often, adversaries will agree to a resolution mechanic before combat begins with the GM in secret, determine the winner, and then script the scene for maximum story impact.

Question: What is included in my all-inclusive ticket?

Your ticket covers everything but your travel costs and costumes. Your ticket provides the entire vacation adventure, including character creation, pre-event planning, hotel room, meals, drinks/snacks, some alcohol, festivities, thematic photography, and more! We believe the value of Dragon Thrones is that, unlike conventions, we cover all your needs in the ticket!

Question: Is the event good for beginners?

Absolutely! Dragon Thrones often bridges Larps, RPG gaming, and Ren Faires. The weekend features custom characters and moving plots of a European-style Larp, with the expanded worlds of American tabletop RPG gaming. Add in our light weapon combat and the pageantry and festiveness seen at Ren Faires, and you have a complete fantasy vacation! There is always something for new players to choose from! Weekends are scheduled like a cruise or tour, so you can try what seems most fun for your character!

Question: Do I need my costume?

Costuming is a personal choice. You are responsible for your costumes. However, we and our eagerly supportive player base will advise on the available costume options! Your Kingdom and character class best determine costumes. Each House has its own rich culture and colors. We can also view photos of costuming you already own to draft a character that fits into (no pun intended) your current closeted items. Dragon Thrones is a judgment-free place. You are free to wear comfortable and affordable costumes. We do have a policy of no modern clothing at our events. We ban jeans, athletic gear, loud-colored sneakers, etc. We are happy to consult with you!

Question: May I bring weapons?

No metal weapons of any kind are permitted. Only latex weapons are permitted. Example: https://epicarmoury.com/categories/weaponry/.

You can find latex weapons easily on the internet, including options on Amazon. For our combat features, we provide you with pre-cleared latex weapons at the event that is safe and appropriate for the quest.

Question: How are characters created?

Dragon Thrones has pre-generated Characters called “Legendary Characters,” most of which are high-born people from each Kingdom with a place on the Kingdom’s Court. After either a (1) brief phone consultation or (2) completion of a survey, you will be assigned a Character you would find exciting to play! This process makes casting you into a Kingdom and Character much faster so you can being preparing your costuming and garb. Additionally, you can make or tweak your RPG stats using the Dragon Thrones 5e RPG Book should you wish to do so (or we will give you a RGP Sheet). Of course, you will be able to make decisions and tweaks to the character and play the character in any you believe you be the most fun for you. We can advise in a live consultation.

Question: Can I bring a group of friends or family?

If everyone gets a ticket, then yes! We can place you in the same Kingdom (depending on availability) and ensure you do many fun features together, and even set up your hotel rooms in a group. We are here to ensure that your group has an unforgettable weekend!

Question: How much does a ticket cost?

Dragon Thrones is not a “one size fits all” ticket. Similar to a historical location vacation or a cruise, there are different factors to consider. We do not want to plaster a hard-sell ticket page lacking helpful information. We work hard and take extra time to be your travel agent and gaming experts to professionally explain the event, how it functions, what to expect, what we offer, what additional needs you may have that we can help with, plus travel advice and other details regarding your room, meals, character preferences, play style, costuming and more. We price our packages to be competitive and always take time to explain everything once you apply on this website.

Question: Do you have a ticket refund policy?

TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE because we reserve your room and character and are prevented from re-selling that limited spot once purchased. Dragon Thrones is a large production, and all ticket proceeds are immediately used to book and build this special event. Therefore, payments in full or partial payments are non-refundable. If you are unsure if you can attend Dragon Thrones, please tell us first! Let us know if you are interested, but also tell us that you need time to consider it. We are here to help and are happy to communicate when you are ready to consider booking. That is the best approach for someone who needs more time.
